Reflections from Childhood

How Fundraising Shaped My Career

Growing up in rural Saskatchewan in the 1980’s brings back fond memories and feelings of gratitude for my hometown community.  It has been over 25 years since I left, where I knew everyone, to move to the big city of Saskatoon.

In my hometown everyone helped each other. We had to support each other for the community to survive and thrive.

Looking back, I remember how proud I was to be the top fundraiser in Saskatchewan for the M.S. Read-A-Thon and how I was supported by the community in Raymore.  My motivation was personal…helping my Dad, who suffered from Multiple Sclerosis. Going door to door, asking for pledges for every book I read, taught me invaluable lessons that I carry with me today.

  1. Find Your “Why”

Back then, my “why” was my dad. I thought the world of my dad and wanted to help him.  That motivated me to keep going.  I read as many books as I could and probably knocked on the door of every home in our town.

Today, my “why” is helping successful and caring employers enhance their benefits and pension programs, ensuring their employees are well taken care of. Understanding your “why” makes all the difference in staying motivated and focused.

  1. Community Matters

The support I received from my neighbours showed me the power of community. Now, I apply that same principle in my work.

Building strong relationships and connections with our clients is our priority so we can deeply understand the challenges they are facing and how we can support them.  I am inspired by our clients that focus on creating a sense of community in their workplace and witness how it leads to more engaged and satisfied employees.

  1. Be Brave and Ask

Knocking on doors was intimidating, but it taught me the importance of “the ask”.  As a kid, I never took it to heart if someone said no, or didn’t answer the door, I’d just move on with optimism.  And, I would try back later!

In my role today, I get to meet so many different and interesting employers.  If they are open to chat, I am always excited to meet them.  I am interested to learn about them, their business needs and priorities and see if I could help.

I remind myself, if I don’t ask, they might never know what they are missing, or what opportunities they have and what they can do about it.  I must find the courage to ask.

  1. Small Actions, Big Impact

Every pledge and every book I read contributed to a larger goal, which was raising money for research and helping people like my dad living with M.S.

Similarly, optimizing even one aspect of a benefits or pension plan can significantly impact a business and its employees. It’s about making meaningful changes that enhance overall well-being and financial security. It’s extremely rewarding knowing the ripple effect of all the people and families that are looked after through our client’s benefits and pension plans.

The M.S. Read-A-Thon was more than just a fundraiser; it was a transformative childhood experience that shaped my approach to my career as a benefits advisor and business owner.  The lessons I learned about purpose, community, courage, and making a difference guide me still today as I help successful employers optimize their benefits and pension programs. I love to do the work that I do and help the great clients we get to work with!

And If you are wondering, I still devour books and love reading! My favourite book this summer was “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There” by Marshall Goldsmith.
