Welcome to Speed Vegas!
Here I find myself at Speed Vegas, 15-minutes South of the Las Vegas Strip in the Mojave Desert. It’s mid-afternoon and the sun beats down relentlessly on the racetrack.
Helmet on, strapped in the back seat of a race car, I am ready for the Practice Run.
The professional racing driver takes three of us for 2 laps around the 1.3-mile racetrack. The racetrack was designed by experts, including hairpins, double apex corners, 90-degree corners and more. This is no joke.
One lap. Slow. So, we get a feel for the track.
Second lap. Fast.
My turn to drive. I get buckled into to my Red Ferrari 488 GTB with my Coach, Luigi by my side. He is coaching me constantly:
“Full throttle.”
“Brake harder. Brake more.”
“More Gas”
“Pass. Go!”
He has his own set of foot pedals, braking when necessary and keeping me safe. Gently guiding the steering wheel when I need a bit of course correction.
Word of advice, direction, and encouragement, customized for my skills and the situation.
My 4th lap was my Best Lap was 1:07:23. Top speed was 197km/ hour. Exhilarating!
I could NOT have reached that level of success without my driver Coach, Luigi.
Well, I could have technically still drove around the racetrack on my own. It would have taken way longer and I would not have learned what I did. Nor would I have enjoyed it near as much.
That experience left me with a whole new level of appreciation for the professional race car drivers and their knowledge, skills, and abilities. And I am more confident driving now and definitely interested and motivated to race again. Of course, with a professional driver still coaching me by my side.
